Tropical Shirley Temple

mocktail

People often remember their “firsts.”  Their first kiss…their first car…their first adult beverage.  I remember the first time I had an “adult” beverage.  I was in grade school and went on a family trip to visit my aunt in Detroit.  During that summer vacation, my aunt took us on a ferry to Boblo Island.  It was then that I was offered a Shirley Temple, and I instantly fell in love with the fruity taste and sophisticated (for a child) feel.  To this day, it remains my favorite beverage.  Yes, when my friends order a cocktail during a night out on the town, I order a mocktail.

To celebrate my new baby, I thought I’d recreate my favorite drink at home.  During my pregnancy, I drank tons of ginger ale in an attempt to ward off nausea.  When my favorite canned version wasn’t quite doing the trick, I decided to try some fancy ginger ale that has a higher concentration of ginger.  I was so excited about the possibility of getting some nausea relief that I ordered a case of it online.  Since I have a few bottles left, I decided to jazz them up a bit by covering the label with decorative paper.  The addition of the decorative paper helped to add to the happy vibes surrounding my daughter’s birth and would also be perfect for a drink station when I next host brunch at my house.  Below is my recipe for a tropical version of this childhood favorite..
